09 / Questions

Frequently asked questions.

The questions we hear most from Bellingham homeowners, answered straight.

How much does drywall repair cost in Bellingham?
A single small patch in Bellingham starts around $150, and most repair jobs run $200 to $1,200 depending on how much wall or ceiling is involved. Water-stained and sagging ceilings, multi-room cracks, or matching a hard texture push toward the high end. Full drywall hanging and finishing is priced by the square foot of board, usually $2.25 to $4.50. That covers labor, materials, three real coats of mud, full sanding, and the texture match. Send us a quote request and we'll give you an exact number for your place.
Can you just patch the hole, or does the whole wall have to come out?
Most of the time it's a patch or a section, not a teardown. A doorknob hole, a popped nail, a hairline crack, those are quick fixes. We cut back to solid board or framing, set a backed patch, tape it so it won't crack back, then match the texture. We only recommend replacing a full sheet when the damage is widespread, the board is water-swollen and soft, or there's mold behind it. We'll tell you straight which one it is when we look.
Will the texture match the rest of my house?
Yes, matching texture is most of what makes a repair disappear. We match knockdown, orange peel, skip-trowel, and hand textures, and we can go smooth if you want a Level 5 wall. A smooth patch on an orange-peel wall stands out forever, so we take the time to read the existing pattern and feather the new texture into it. On a whole room we can apply any of those finishes new.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Bellingham Drywall Co. is operated by Apex Builderz LLC, a licensed, bonded, and insured Washington general contractor (WA Contractor Reg. # APEXBBL749B1, UBI 604-945-342). We carry general liability insurance and a contractor bond, and we're happy to show you the paperwork. Just ask.
What drywall and finish do you use?
The right board for the room. We hang 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch board, 5/8-inch Type X where fire-rating is required, and moisture-resistant board or cement board in bathrooms, laundries, and damp basements where water lives. We use setting-type compound for the first coats where strength and fast set matter, all-purpose for the finish coats, and paper or fiberglass mesh tape depending on the joint. It's not about a brand, it's about matching the material to where it has to live.
How do you keep the drywall dust down?
We contain the work area with plastic and zip walls, mask off doorways and vents, and run dust control while we sand. Where it fits the job we use vacuum-assisted sanders or wet-sanding methods so the dust isn't drifting through the whole house. It's never zero dust, drywall sanding makes a mess, but we keep it boxed into the room we're working in and we clean up at the end of every day.
How long does drywall mud take to dry in Bellingham?
Longer than the bag says, because our air is damp for months at a time. All-purpose compound can take a full day or more to dry between coats here when the humidity is up, where a dry climate might let you recoat the same day. We plan the coats around that and run air movement and sometimes a dehumidifier to keep things on schedule. We don't rush a coat that isn't dry, because mud that's taped over wet is mud that cracks and telegraphs through later.
Do you finish it so I can just paint?
Yes. We finish to the Level 4 or Level 5 you specify, sanded smooth and primed-ready, so the painter can prime and paint without fixing our work first. Level 4 is the standard for most walls under flat or matte paint. Level 5 adds a full skim coat for walls under glossier paint or strong raking light, where every flaw shows. We hand off a flat wall, not a problem.
